Responding to BlueSteps - 5 Key Ways to Maximize your LinkedIn Profile

My 5 recommendations to Senior Executives for maximizing a LinkedIn profile are:
1. Customize your URL and insert your web sites. You will improve your visibility via sites and in Google search rankings.
2. Complete your profile 100% with picture and recommendations, so people know it’s you among others with a similar name, and they see what you are known for among others.
3. Build your network!  Establishing your presence and collecting invites is nice, but you miss a lot without participating. With a larger network you can leverage your LinkedIn presence and tools for results.
4. Key words –yes!  Really think about this for your personal branding – who uses the technology to search for you, and what words do they search?  You can test this by monitoring how many times you come up in searches daily.  Some Senior Exeuctives put a bio and only headings for employment, so words and terms need to really count and specialties help.
5. Use and watch updates and applications postings (e.g., travel, press releases, blogs, events, slides, etc.) to keep up-to-date with people and connect.

In the three years I’ve been testing LinkedIn and watching it evolve, it just gets better. Have fun!

Which social media networks are for you?

With more companies and individuals embracing social media, it's useful for you to understand today's networks and their demographics.  Study: Ages of Social Network Users  provides an interesting snapshot of social network user demographics in the US.  Which networks relate best to your professional objectives?  How can you use these networks to achieve professional objectives, which may include job search, business or product development, launch and promotion?  These are two questions I'm asking clients, as they look to develop business and career growth strategies.  If you haven't asked yourself, now is the time.

Facebook - Take a Look at Yourself

Ever wonder what people see when they look at your Facebook profile?  If you are looking for a job, being considered for a promotion, or have high career aspirations, you may want to take a look.  Here's how - select Account and then Privacy Settings.  Next, select Profile Information, and then in the upper right hand corner, you will see the "Preview My Profile" button.  Click on it.  This will be interesting, because it will show you how most people see your profile, and you can type a specific person's name in the text box to see what that particular individual will see.  Try it now.  Then, consider if what you see is going to help you or hurt you in your career pursuits.

Linkedin - Smart Search and Development Strategy

Here are the top reasons I think you should consider using LinkedIN as part of your search and career development strategy:

Networking building - you can get back in touch with old contacts, find new contacts and engage in relevant professional networks/communities.

Visibility - you can quickly establish a web presence if you don't already have one, and specify who can have access to your profile information. 

Referrals - these can be maintained in one visible location, which is handy for you and others. This can help position you ahead of others for new opportunities and allow you to pursue new career and business opportunities faster.

Keeping in touch - you remain in contact with your connections through their job changes, you can easily keep in touch with update messages, and you can easily reach your network on-line if you don't have business contact details with you.

Rapid search and research - it's one single web location to identify new jobs, begin researching companies and employees to connect with.

Social Media and Your Career

Search Tip - Which social media communities and tools are most helpful to building your career?  That depends a lot on your profession and career objectives.  Generally speaking, for professionals, I recommend starting on LinkedIN for a number of reasons.  You can see 5 reasons I recommend LinkedIN here.  However, there are a number of other social media tools and communities which can be powerful tools for building your career, if you are willing to take the time to learn to use them and engage in the communities.  For example, for writers and media folks, blogging, Facebook and twitter should be in your toolkit.  

Bottom line, consider your profession, how you want to position yourself within it, and which social media platforms and communities allow you to connect most powerfully with your career objectives.
