First, I hope everyone is safe and well in the wake of Sandy. What a week. My thoughts have been with you, and I am wishing everyone full and rapid recovery. I was in Manhattan and saw what some are going through. I noted that communications have been a challenge for many professionals and for several businesses we serve. (Some still do not have telephone and/or e-mail systems restored.) That said, I managed to get through to hundreds of professional contacts to ensure they were safe and well, using many different approaches.
The tip this week is to keep in touch! Learn and use multiple ways to do so. It will serve you well in emergency situations like we had this week, and it will serve you well in your everyday personal and professional life. It will also help you be highly effective as you seek new and promotional career opportunities, which is the focus of our work together.
Here are 10 ways I keep in touch:
- In-person, one-to-one meetings
- In-person, group meetings (professional associations, alumni groups, sports activities, social events, etc.)
- Telephone calls (landline, mobile, Skype)
- Text messaging (mobile phones, Skype, message chats)
- Social media networks one-to-one messaging (e.g., LinkedIn inMail)
- Social media networks one-to-many messaging (e.g., blog postings, group e-mails)
- Social media networks group participation
- Via another person (family, friends, business associate, referrals, etc.)
- Traditional mail service (Yes, I still use it!)
- News services (sending articles and other news items)
How do you keep in touch with your personal and professional network? Come prepared to share your approaches and ideas next week when we meet on the webinar to discuss networking and highly effective interviewing. In the meantime, do keep in touch, be safe and well!
